According to official documentation, Microsoft will typically release a new major version of Windows 10 LTSB every two to three years. You can also choose to skip releases—every version of Windows 10 LTSB will be supported with security and stability updates for ten years, according to Microsoft. LTSB is only for rare mission-critical devices.
Microsoft wants your PC constantly updated with new features. The Enterprise edition gives you more control over telemetry data sent to Microsoft and when Windows Update installs updates. It also lets you change some special group policy settings, allowing you to disable the lock screen. Sounds pretty good, right?
Update: A previous version of this article said you could use Windows 10 LTSB past the evaluation period with only a few nag screens. This was incorrect, and we apologize for the error. Purpose: Create a small functional image to be used for a fast virtual machine which can run most Windows Desktop applications, using minimal memory and minimal HD space. This is not a general guide, but just the steps I documented for my own needs, which may prove helpful to others who want to accomplish something similar.

Dynamics Microsoft Dynamics Identity and Access Management.Examples of the latter include kiosks, medical equipment, and digital signs, i. Organizations that leverage this approach are seeking the manageability and security of Windows 10 while staying on the same operating system version for the life of the device. If you ask someone from Microsoft, or read industry guidance, about the best strategy for managing Windows 10 updates, the overarching recommendation is to use the Semi-Annual Channel SAC as the default servicing channel for Windows 10 devices.
With the Semi-Annual Channel, devices receive two feature updates per year, and benefit from the best performance, user experience, security, and stability. Examples include medical systems such as those used for MRI and CAT scansindustrial process controllers, and air traffic control devices.
These devices share characteristics of embedded systems: they are typically designed for a specific purpose and are developed, tested, and certified before use. We designed the LTSC with these types of use cases in mind, offering the promise that we will support each LTSC release for 10 years--and that features, and functionality will not change over the course of that year lifecycle.
As I noted above, Windows 10 devices in the Semi-Annual Channel receive twice-yearly feature updates, once in the spring and once in the fall. These updates contain new features, services, and other major changes.
Security updates, optimizations, and other minor updates or patches are released every month thereafter. To deliver on the commitment of no changes to features or functionality, a Windows 10 LTSC release does not contain any of the components of Windows 10 that may change over the life of the release.
We create a new LTSC release approximately every three years, and each release contains all the new capabilities and support included in the Windows 10 features updates that have been released since the previous LTSC release. Unlike the year-and-month terminology employed to describe Windows 10 features updates e. Each LTSC release receives 10 years of servicing and support [i].
FAQ: Windows 10 LTSB explained
During the life of a LTSC release, you can upgrade your devices to the next or latest LTSC release free of charge using an in-place upgrade, or to any currently supported release of Windows As with the Semi-Annual Channel, LTSC devices receive regular quality and security updates to ensure that device security stays up to date.
Before its release and throughout the first year of Windows 10, many predicted that LTSC would be the preferred servicing channel for enterprise customers. This has turned out not to be the case, and the SAC is the predominant choice for enterprises today. There are several reasons why using the LTSC can turn out to be the wrong fit for the Windows 10 devices in an organization.
For example, one organization deployed LTSC to bring forward the same IT rules and image creation and management processes they had used since Windows XP, in this case to new Surface devices.
Another reason some organizations chose to adopt the LTSC centered around application compatibility. In talking with some of these organizations; however, initial concerns about application compatibility from release to release in their environment have proved to be a non-issue.
All too often, I have seen strategic decisions about Windows 10 servicing options and the use of the Long-Term Servicing Channel driven by the wrong criteria; for example, IT professional familiarity prevailing over end user value and impact. The LTSC is designed for devices and use cases where features and functionality will not change.
It provides 10 years of security servicing to a static Windows 10 feature set. If you are considering the LTSC for devices in your organization, please consider the following:. The Long-Term Servicing Channel a tool designed for a specific job.Skip to main content.

Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It only takes a minute to sign up. I'm interested in the installation size of Windows 10 when it has been installed on an existing, clean, Windows 7 or Windows 8 installation.
How many GB would this occupy? Would there be a significant difference if upgrading from Windows 7 vs. Windows 8? Microsoft says 20 GB for bit OS.
This is for a clean install onto a new disk, keeping nothing. You are braver than I am to try an upgrade. My previous Win 7 install had suffered from windows rot degeneration of the registry over the years so needed blasting anyway.
I use a Gargoyle router to throttle the windows update downloads from killing the internet for everyone. Depending on the size of the drive, after Disk Cleanup, and the size and number of System Restore Points, you can expect a footprint of from around 22gig to as large as 35 gig.
This is assuming the Documents folder and Pictures folder do not hold much data. But you should know what the components you are removing are as you could remove critical system files. Alternatively, change permissions of the entire C: to give you full access to delete files through the "Properties" "Security" "Advanced" settings Change principle, etc.
Most other stuff in the WinSXS folder are drivers, and most of them are just incase your system has those devices. Then there are things like Pagefile. Then there are TEMP folders in Windows and the appdata folder under "Users" these are mostly reminants of installation packages.

And it grows substantially over time.Looking for consumer information? The Windows 10 operating system introduces a new way to build, deploy, and service Windows: Windows as a service.
Microsoft has reimagined each part of the process, to simplify the lives of IT pros and maintain a consistent Windows 10 experience for its customers. These improvements focus on maximizing customer involvement in Windows development, simplifying the deployment and servicing of Windows client computers, and leveling out the resources needed to deploy and maintain Windows over time.
Prior to Windows 10, Microsoft released new versions of Windows every few years. This traditional deployment schedule imposed a training burden on users because the feature revisions were often significant.
Windows as a service will deliver smaller feature updates two times per year, around March and September, to help address these issues. In the past, when Microsoft developed new versions of Windows, it typically released technical previews near the end of the process, when Windows was nearly ready to ship.
With Windows 10, new features will be delivered to the Windows Insider community as soon as possible — during the development cycle, through a process called flighting — so that organizations can see exactly what Microsoft is developing and start their testing as soon as possible. Microsoft also depends on receiving feedback from organizations throughout the development process so that it can make adjustments as quickly as possible rather than waiting until after release.
For more information about the Windows Insider Program and how to sign up, see the section Windows Insider. Of course Microsoft also performs extensive internal testing, with engineering teams installing new builds daily, and larger groups of employees installing builds frequently, all before those builds are ever released to the Windows Insider Program.
Deploying Windows 10 is simpler than with previous versions of Windows. When migrating from earlier versions of Windows, an easy in-place upgrade process can be used to automatically preserve all apps, settings, and data.Сменил Windows 10 на Windows 10 LTSB by LeX_6000. And once running Windows 10, deployment of Windows 10 feature updates will be equally simple. One of the biggest challenges for organizations when it comes to deploying a new version of Windows is compatibility testing.
Whereas compatibility was previously a concern for organizations upgrading to a new version of Windows, Windows 10 is compatible with most hardware and software capable of running on Windows 7 or later. Because of this high level of compatibility, the app compatibility testing process can be greatly simplified.
Application compatibility testing has historically been a burden when approaching a Windows deployment or upgrade. With Windows 10, application compatibility from the perspective of desktop applications, websites, and apps built on the Universal Windows Platform UWP has improved tremendously. Microsoft understands the challenges organizations experienced when they migrated from the Windows XP operating system to Windows 7 and has been working to make Windows 10 upgrades a much better experience.
Most Windows 7—compatible desktop applications will be compatible with Windows 10 straight out of the box. Windows 10 achieved such high compatibility because the changes in the existing Win32 application programming interfaces were minimal.
Combined with valuable feedback via the Windows Insider Program and diagnostic data, this level of compatibility can be maintained through each feature update. As for websites, Windows 10 includes Internet Explorer 11 and its backward-compatibility modes for legacy websites. Finally, UWP apps follow a compatibility story similar to desktop applications, so most of them will be compatible with Windows For the most important business-critical applications, organizations should still perform testing on a regular basis to validate compatibility with new builds.
For remaining applications, consider validating them as part of a pilot deployment process to reduce the time spent on compatibility testing. Device compatibility in Windows 10 is also very strong; new hardware is not needed for Windows 10 as any device capable of running Windows 7 or later can run Windows In fact, the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 10 are the same as those required for Windows 7. Most hardware drivers that functioned in Windows 8. Traditional Windows servicing has included several release types: major revisions e.
With Windows 10, there are two release types: feature updates that add new functionality twice per year, and quality updates that provide security and reliability fixes at least once a month.
With Windows 10, organizations will need to change the way they approach deploying updates. Servicing channels are the first way to separate users into deployment groups for feature and quality updates. With the introduction of servicing channels comes the concept of a deployment ringwhich is simply a way to categorize the combination of a deployment group and a servicing channel to group devices for successive waves of deployment.
For more information about developing a deployment strategy that leverages servicing channels and deployment rings, see Plan servicing strategy for Windows 10 updates.
